Welcome to Largs SWI Sewing Club

We're here to get you sewing - whether you're a complete beginner or just a bit rusty - and you don't need to be a member of Largs SWI to join!  This is a community sewing club that is open to all women in the area. We're extremely grateful to the Community Investment Fund of North Ayrshire Council for supporting us and providing generous funds to purchase our equipment.

Classes will be held at the A D Cameron Centre, 17-19 Lade Street, Largs KA30 8AZ. We hope to be able to offer more classes in the future.  More details to follow.

The beginner’s sewing class is run over 2 weeks in the evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm

This practical sewing course will help you become familiar with the basics of machine sewing and help you build your confidence using a domestic sewing machine before moving on to a simple sewing project.

Week one:

  • Threading the machine and winding and inserting the bobbin in the machine.
  • Confident driving skills
  • Learning about fabric qualities and various machine stitches

Week two:

  • Summary of previous week
  • Then utilise the skills learned in week 1 to complete a simple sewing project.

Once you have completed the 2 week beginners class you will be able to confidently move on to an intermediate class to progress further with your new found skills.

Machines are provided but feel free to bring along your own machine to learn all of its quirks.  Class sizes are kept small to ensure everyone can learn at their own pace and receive ample 1 to 1 tutor time.

The intermediates sewing class is run over 2 weeks in the evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm

This class is aimed at members who have attended a beginners sewing class and would like to progress their skills.

During this workshop, you will make a gorgeous make-up or wash bag that is lined and has a zipper to close.

Taking this to the next level you can easily progress onto fitting a zip, lining and precision cutting and sewing a smaller item - ie the wash bag.

After this class, you’ll be ready to join our dressmaking class and start making your own clothes.

 

The Dressmaking classes are run over 6 weeks in the evening:  7.00pm - 9.00pm

The dress making class is ideal for someone who has intermediate dressmaking skills, you should be comfortable using a sewing machine and have made simple projects such as cushions or bags - or have attended an Introduction to Sewing class.

Key skills learned throughout this course;

  • Measuring, adjusting and pattern cutting
  • Fabric Properties & grain lines
  • Seams, garment construction, pleats, darts, sleeves and pockets (depending on pattern and style chosen)
  • Fitting a concealed zip
  • Hemming and finishing

Class sizes are kept small to ensure everyone has plenty of attention and guidance and there may be a small amount of homework required each week. 

By the end of this course you will have a fabulous made to measure dress, skirt, trousers, jacket etc. and will be able to follow a dress making pattern to make many more clothes for yourself.

This skills class is run in 1 evening from 7.00pm - 9.00pm

You will learn to: 

  • Select the right pattern size that is perfect for your measurements
  • Trace the correct sized Burda Style Pattern from a multi-pattern sheet
  • Add seam and hem allowances to all seams, edges, hems and sleeve hems
  • Know what notions (eg Interfacing, elastic, buttons, zips etc) you will require for your garment
  • Know how much fabric you require for your garment

This class is run over 1 evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm

Bring along your sewing machine and we will help you with any operational needs you may have. This practical sewing course will help you become familiar with the basic features of your own sewing machine and help you build your confidence using it.
